One of our customers, MiAlgae is reducing the reliance on wild-caught fish as a source of Omega-3s.

Omega-3s are essential for human and animal health and are acquired through diet. Fish are the traditional source of marine Omega-3s but now, because approximately 90% of the world stocks are over-exploited or fully depleted, they are no longer a sustainable resource.

Fish do not produce Omega-3s but rather get them through the consumption of algae. MiAlgae therefore go straight to the source and produces a marine Omega-3 ingredient from microalgae that is grown in fermentation vessels using the by-products from whisky distillation.

The Challenge

MiAlgae connected with CRP’s Scotland representative to discuss the viability of using our paste extruded piping and PFA lined corrosion resistant fittings to construct an innovative pasteurisation holding unit. For CRP this was a completely new use for PTFE/PFA piping and an exciting challenge. The pasteurisation process is a vital step, as it ensures that no unwanted contaminants get into the production process.

The key features that needed consideration were:

  • Water Purity:

The supplied system was needed to prevent contaminants from becoming trapped or allowing them to get a foothold in the pasturisation system. This would also make the system easy to clean and thereby ensure the incoming water for the next cycle would not be contaminated.

  • Optimal Insulation:

Given that these pipes are key to the pasteurisation process, they required unparalleled thermal insulation properties to maintain the necessary temperatures, whilst minimising energy consumption.

  • Sustainability and Cost Efficiency:

We aimed to provide a solution that not only met sustainability standards but also offered the lowest total cost of ownership.

Our Solution

CRP PTFE lined pipes and PFA lined fittings are hydraulically smooth, meaning the surface would not present any opportunity for contaminants to get trapped in, or to colonise, thereby maintaining purity and allowing for that fast and easy cleaning needed by the client, a major requirement for MiAlgae.

Time is money and being able to run the plant CIP system between cycles, without any need to break into the system has yielded hugely significant process cost savings to the client.

The CRP piping system is extremely heat-efficient as a standard product, due to the heavy PTFE & PFA lining thickness, which is already a great insulation by itself. However, we collaborated with the client to discuss further enhancements to the heat retaining capabilities of the system. The net result is that the client decided to use pipe lagging to further increase energy efficiency and heat retention. This required CRP to fit venting extensions to the piping, to pass through the lagging for which we developed a new standard stainless steel vent extension tube (pictured below).#
